  1. FACE to FACE—most effective means of communicating as well as personalizing your message. (after meeting with your legislator face to face, establishing a rapport/relationship, some messages/communications may be made by telephone)

  2. Telephone your Legislator—effective if you speak directly with your representative.  Typically you  will speak  to an “assistant” who will only be taking “support/non-support” tallies for upcoming votes/proposals.    Telephone calls may be the only means of contacting your representatives when they are in Springfield and/or immediate attention is necessary regarding a legislative initiative.

  3. Handwritten Letter—much less effective than speaking directly to your legislator (face to face or by telephone)—letter should be written/communicated in your own words.  Keep it simple, state your purpose, who you are, and your request (“support or reject” proposal/bill.)  Form and lengthy letters are not very effective.  Also not effective when dealing with time sensitive/pending legislative issues (snail mail.)

  4. Email—as with handwritten letter, should be written in your own words.  Probably the least effective means of communicating with your representative and conveying your message.  If unable to meet or speak directly with your representative, this is better than “no” communication.
